The Bihar government has officially canceled all leaves for police officers and personnel ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festival to ensure communal harmony and maintain law and order during the celebrations. This directive was issued by Sanjay Kumar, the Additional Director General (Law and Order), in a letter to senior police officials across the state.
Leave Cancellation Directive
The notice, sent to district Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), commandants of Bihar police battalions, and principals of the Bihar Police Academy, instructs all police personnel to remain on duty from October 5 to October 16, 2024. No leave requests will be entertained during this period, except in special circumstances, as per the directive issued by Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Raj.
Bihar Government Focus on Communal Harmony
With Durga Puja being one of the most significant festivals in eastern India, especially in Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, the state government is prioritizing peace and security during this time. The state government has directed increased vigilance in districts that are considered hotspots for communal tensions, including Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Munger, West Champaran, East Champaran, and Darbhanga. These areas have witnessed communal unrest in the past, making it essential to implement strong security protocols.
In fact, the city of Munger, which experienced a tragic incident during the idol immersion procession in 2020, serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace during such events. A 22-year-old man lost his life, and at least 13 police officers and 7 civilians were injured in a violent clash involving stone pelting and firing.
